Red Sonja Comic-Con Panel
Though it hasn't even begun shooting, producer Robert Rodriguez, star Rose McGowan and director Doug Aarniokoski (if that name doesn't instill confidence or ring familiar, he was RR's first AD on most of his previous movies) were on hand to talk about Red Sonja at Comic-Con. They treated us with some mock-ups for posters and Rose McGowan is looking hot(ter than usual).
Rodriguez may only be a producer on paper, but its purely technical. He stated he'll be very "hands on" with the production and work directly with of Doug Aarniokoski in a lot of aspects of the film. If you were to look on Rodriguez's list of favorite comics and magazines you'll see Sin City (check), a lot of Heavy Metal magazines (Barbarella is coming soon) and Conan and, of course, the Red Sonja books. So it's safe to say that he's passionate about the project and will make sure it's just as good as we're all hoping.
McGowan's also pumped for the role. Ever since she played our favorite amputee stripper and zombie killer, McGowan has been frustrated auditioning for "typical female characters" that aren't nearly as strong, as interesting, or as ass kicking. She grew up on La Femme Nikita (required viewing) and is excited for Red Sonja because it will be "Hard, cold, dirty, and bloody." She hinted at a lot of sword play and even some "free running" style action similar to what we saw in Casino Royale.
Imagine if you will, Rose McGowan with flaming red hair, sword in hand, scantily clad, and running (and of course bouncing) all over the place. Be sure to keep reading when you get back from the bathroom.
The main highlight might have been Rose McGowan showing up in a dress she probably had to be poured into, but a runner up was this exchange between Rodriguez and a fan.
The question was:
"With Hollywood taking all of our favorite properties: Terminator, Wolverine, etc. and making them PG-13, can you confirm for us that that won't be the case with Red Sonja?"
And the answer, after a tense pause, with Rodriguez shaking his head then leaning into the mic
"My name is Double R."
And the crowd goes wild.
